Barack Obama, unknown to most Americans just four years ago, will become the 44th president and the first African-American president of the United States. Obama, a senator from Illinois, and his running mate Joe Biden will take the oath of office on January 20, 2009.

The U.S. Embassy in Ottawa would like to remind travelers that beginning January 31, 2008, individuals crossing the border will be asked to present documents denoting citizenship and identity when entering the United States through land and sea ports of entry. This change primarily affects American and Canadian citizens, who have previously been permitted entry by oral declaration alone, and marks the transition toward standard and consistent documents for all travelers entering the United States.

Consul General Friedman and local employee Sylvain Verreault visited the Canadian Research Icebreaker CCGS Amundsen before it left port Aug. 22 for Nunavut. The Consul General will be visiting Iqaluit, Pangnirtung, and Pond Inlet, in Nunavut Territory, Sept. 18-22.

The 2006 Quebec International Air Show took place June 10-11 under rainy skies. Despite the grey weather, those who attended the air show were rewarded with spectacular aerial acrobatics performed by a number of international pilots, including the Canadian Snow Birds and the Blue Angels of the US Navy. Proceeds from the event went to special-needs and mobility-impaired children. The next Quebec Air Show is scheduled for the summer of 2008 when the city celebrates the 400th anniversary of its founding.

On May 9th, 2006 students from the Josiah Quincy Upper School in Boston and from Cardinal Roy High School in Quebec City had lunch with the Consul General. The students were part of an exchange program funded by the Boston Maple Leaf Foundation. The exchange allowed for a wonderful intercultural experience and the opportunity to learn about the role of the Consul General and of the consular presence in Quebec.

Consul General Abigail Friedman greets the St. Paul Minnesota Ice Sculpting Team in Quebec City. This year, St. Paul, Minnesota is the special guest of the Quebec Carnival. In addition to the St. Paul team, a U.S. team will be competing in the International Sculpting competition. Quebec's Carnival runs from January 27 - February 12, 2006. St. Paul's Carnival, the oldest in North America, runs from Jan. 27 to Feb. 5, 2006.
